Washer Machine Problems – The Most Common Faults?

AEG was set up in 1887 but over a century later it had ended production and the brand changed its name to AEG-Electrolux.   They are a leading worldwide leading manufacturers of electronic goods and home appliances, that include industrial products and power tools.  In a recent opinon poll, a member of Which? the independent advice service for consumers said that her 40 year old AEG Turnamat washer is still operating in 2011 –  a glowing recommendation of German engineering reliability.  But, in the 21st century long lifespans for household appliances are uncommon.  And when you consider their regular and heavy use washing machine repair callouts can be a normal occurrence.  Because washers do so many things, problems could be harder to diagnose than they are to fix. For a domestic gadget, it’s a relatively complicated apparatus – with computerised wash cycles that activate valves, motors that fill the drum, spin the tub, drain water, and manipulate the temperature of the water.

There are a number of things that can go wrong on a washing machine including:

1.    Leaks from door – in all probability a split or worn door seal.
2.    Water won’t load – a frequent reason for a washing machine not taking any water in is either a kinked hose or the tap becoming faulty whereby you turn it on but the valve inside does not turn.  An additional common cause is the tap being accidentally switched off and folks not realising. Various other faults can be programme control, wiring or water valve.   Check your error code by checking at the machine’s manual.
3.    Machine will not drain – this can be caused by a blockage or a failed pump, or an electrical fault stopping the pump from working.

Some minor defects can be simply remedied by yourself such as cleaning the washing powder dispenser drawer if there is a build-up of mould and the fabric softener dispenser fills with water.  If your washing has a mouldy or musty aroma, you should run the washer without washing on the hottest cycle possible with a cup of Clorox or soda crystals.  This is an increasing problem as wash powders are devised to be used with cold water wash cycles.   Do not attempt to repair any faults if you receive electric shocks from it or the paddles or drum are broken.  Always contact a professional in the case of fixing such an expensive appliance, particularly where electricity is actively involved.

Householder attitudes to repairing or replacing white goods are shifting, less are repaired when they break down, but fixing them in preference to replacing is environmentally friendly.  Ensure that the repairmen you call out to fix washing machines are manufacturer-approved engineers, with a quick response time to your call out.
